Machupicchu announces dynamic capacity to ensure a safe trip and the conservation of the sanctuary

Cusco, February 17, 2024 – The Minister of Culture, Leslie Urteaga, announced today in Machupicchu Town, after a meeting with the Steering Committee of the Machupicchu Management Unit (UGM), the approval of a dynamic daily capacity of 5600 visitors for the period from June 1 to October 15 of this year, including some national holidays. This measure seeks to ensure a safe trip and the sustainability of the emblematic tourist destination.

“This is the first time that we are reaching agreements with a lot of interest from the UGM to improve services in Machupicchu. We are convinced that dynamic capacity could be a positive solution,” said Minister Urteaga. This initiative will allow visitors to plan their vacations in Machupicchu in advance, thus guaranteeing a safe and enriching experience.

The implementation of dynamic capacity will also give authorities the necessary time to develop tourist activity sustainably, ensuring the conservation and maintenance of the sanctuary. Minister Urteaga highlighted the importance of collaboration with UNESCO for technical assistance and accompaniment in this process.

The meeting was attended by important figures, such as the Vice Minister of Tourism of Mincetur Peru, Madeleine Burns; the governor of the Cusco Regional Government, Werner Salcedo; the mayor of Machupicchu, Elvis La Torre; the representative of the Ministry of the Environment – Peru, the head of the Sernanp Official, José Carlos Nieto, among other authorities and representatives of the regional, local government, and civil society.

With these measures, Machupicchu is consolidated as a “Safe Cusco” destination, promoting responsible and sustainable tourism that protects one of the world’s most important cultural treasures.
